With the annual sports franchises gearing up to release their 2019 iterations over the next few months, one of the last holdouts for announcement has been 2K’s annual WWE franchise. After taking the franchise in some interesting new directions in last years iteration, 2K has announced WWE 2K20, releasing on October 22nd on PS4, Xbox One & PC. The publisher also confirmed the franchise will continue to explore new directions and push further in some other areas, whilst also delivering on some much-requested features and content.

The brunt of the single-player content will focus around its cover stars – Becky Lynch and Roman Reigns, the former of which is the first woman to grace the cover of the series. Lynch is one of four playable characters in this years new WWE Showcase mode, centered around the Four Horsewomen of WWE (which include Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks & Bayley) and the reinvention of women’s wrestling in mainline WWE. Roman Reigns headlines the return of 2K Towers, with a special story-focused tower centered around the career of Reigns.

WWE 2K20 can best be described as breaking down barriers, as not only will mixed tag matches make a return, you’ll also be able to finally play a Female MyCareer mode, which sets to continue down the weird path that last years MyCareer went down. Completing this is the all-new WWE 2K20 Originals, brand new showcase content that aims to take existing WWE superstars and reinvent them with all new themes and storylines. While these Originals are still shrouded in secrecy, they’ll make up the brunt of the games downloadable offerings instead of additional superstars and moves.

While not much was revealed as far as the roster goes, by far the most exciting addition is 2019 Hall of Famer Chyna, who makes her first appearance in the WWE 2K series and her first WWE game appearance since 2001. With the game looking to explore some new and weirder directions, it’s going to be exciting to see where the game and the series goes from here.

2020 was not a great year, but you’re probably well aware of that. It was a year that many of us struggled to get through, and saw the world adapting to a new normal in record breaking time. For us here at New Game Plus, we were unable to film out of our studio space at RMIT due to the pandemic. However, thanks to the ingenuity of our team, we were able to quickly and easily adapt the show to work recording from our homes. Up until we’d filmed our Game of the Year episode, we hadn’t filmed a television show in the same space together in over 9 months.  Even amongst the un...

The pivotal final month of Saturday online events for CouchWarriors League 2020 has delivered a barrage of top-flight competition, with three games having concluded their ranking seasons so far. The last two weekends were a study in contrasts; Smash Melee was reduced to a victory lap for an unstoppable champion, while Tekken 7’s overall season winner wasn’t decided until the very last blow! Smash Melee Saturday the 14th saw the final CouchWarriors League 2020 points awarded for Smash Melee. In the now well-trodden arena of The Australian Internet, the top class players of the nation would...

Wrestling promotion All Elite Wrestling has announced its first foray into the world of videogames, detailing  their upcoming game in a press conference today. Partnering with Yuke’s, former developers of WWE’s  Smackdown line of games, the new title is slated to launch on current and next-gen consoles alongside mobile titles AEW Elite General Manager and AEW Casino: Double Or Nothing, branded after the annual AEW pay per view event.  “When I signed my contract, I told (AEW founder Tony) Khan I want to give wrestling fans the game they  want, the game they deserve,” said AEW Execu...

This strange, abbreviated but intense 14-event season of CouchWarriors League SFV came to a head on Saturday with the final CWL Online for the year. Doubled ranking points meant stakes were high, with the ladderboard leaders desperately holding onto the cash bounties attached to their top 3 spots. Even those well outside the top 3 were playing for keeps, since reaching the Grand Final here would be enough to earn another shot at the money in next month’s Season Finale. The competition has been fierce all year long, but now the finals atmosphere was palpable as players busted out pocket picks...

Another weekend has passed, and the last CWL Online event for the month is in the books. With only one more event left on the schedule for each game, October represented the last real chance for any new names to show up and make a tilt at qualification for the Season Finale. Players whose qualification was already locked in were still there at full force as they battled tooth and nail for top placegetter payouts. This weekend also saw a bit of league rules weirdness, as players in the South Australian scene seemed like they might have grabbed an extra chance at those prizes. Capitalizing on th...

This weekend gave the Australian fighting game community a bittersweet taste of what 2020 might have held, were we not forced to spend most of it at home. For the first time since summer, the CouchWarriors League schedule was able to feature something more exclusive than an simple online ranbat, as the Tekken World Tour Online Challenge travelled down under! As the title implies, the “travel” here was all metaphorical – the Online Challenge events being the TWT’s own hasty compromise in the face of a cancelled tournament circuit. The realities of netplay meant that this World Tour...

The 2020 CouchWarriors League is well onto the home stretch, and halfway through October competition we can really see who is pulling ahead among the top contenders for each game. Both the Street Fighter bracket on the 3rd and the Melee competition on the tenth pulled 24 attendees, giving us short but extremely fierce tournaments. It seems like after the initial boom of contenders entering following the double-points announcement, we have once again crunched the numbers down to just those players with the most points, or the most self-confidence. Street Fighter V One of the first and most sh...

Things have been heating up in Australia’s fighting game community all month, and it’s not just good spring weather. Tournament registrations are up, prize pools have been raised, and even in embattled Victoria there are signs that coronavirus is slowly receding – giving us hope of holding CouchWarriors League events in person next season. This excited atmosphere was heightened further in the Smash Ultimate scene, as the successful Cospendium Open series decided to merge its remaining event schedule with existing CWL monthlies. With the stakes having risen twice already since August,...

October 8, 2020

As we covered in our last report, the leaderboards for the inaugural CouchWarriors League had been shaken up by the announcement this year’s remaining tournaments would offer double ranking points. The Tekken 7 race was already close; now it was virtually open season. Despite the heightened stakes – further amplified by this event’s inclusion under the official PAX Online banner – the spike in registration witnessed in other CWL Online events this month didn’t materialize. This bracket saw a bump in quality rather than quantity – Naveed “Kanga|Chand NY” Iqbal signin...
