VIC February 2020 FGC RANBAT RESULTS

February 23, 2020

Written by Tom Anderson

CouchWarriors VIC FGC Ranbats for February 2020 were held on Saturday the 15th at Davies St in Brunswick. Here’s a summary of the results in every game and how the top matches played out. A complete listing of match results and brackets for each game can be viewed on Smash.gg here.

Results for SFV, MK11, Tekken 7, and Smash U count towards the standings for the BAM Path To EVO series for that game, which can be viewed here.

Street Fighter V

  1. DS|Somniac
  2. ORDER|ROF
  3. Rupps

I think I have to apologize to Christian “ORDER|ROF” Dedalija for jinxing him last month. No sooner did I boast about his seeming invincibility in SFV than Xavier “DS|Somniac” Nardella rose to the challenge and brought the endboss down. Somniac’s run was even more impressive as he had to recover from a round 2 loss to John “ZEDDD” Le, but the veteran rallied and eventually overwhelmed ROF 6 games to 2 across two grand final sets.

Tekken 7

  1. Kanga|ChandNY
  2. DHT|Chipzeeh
  3. Mr-Kojeski

With ROF dethroned in SFV there must have been a shot of hope injected into the Tekken 7 crowd that perhaps they too could overthrow their ranbat final boss. But Naveed “Kanga|ChandNY” Iqbal brushed his competition aside once again, giving up just one game in grand finals to show he’s still mortal. Perhaps next month he will meet a worthy competitor?

Mortal Kombat 11

  1. ODT|GooGie
  2. raidr
  3. WIBTE|Souls Clue

raidr proved that last month wasn’t a fluke by placing again in a slightly more robust field, and even taking a set off Edison “ODT|GooGie” Nguyen. It’s great to see people put pressure on the established top players, and it’ll be interesting to see if raidr can generate the consistent results this year to join that group.

No hoverhand from GooGie – he’s establishing dominance.

DragonBall FighterZ

  1. ZEDDD
  2. Agent17805
  3. Imp

Samurai Shodown

  1. DS|Somniac
  2. Humzoid0909
  3. Rupps

Somniac was clearly on top of his game this month, as he secured a second win in what has become something of a pet game for him.

Soul Calibur VI

  1. JEL
  2. DaBeast
  3. DarcyH

Our top 3 for this month looked much more embarrassed than you’d expect after that performance. JEL is on fire with back-to-back wins, and DarcyH made a podium debut with a breakthrough run. With SCIV one of the headlining world tours at BAM this year I’d expect competition to heat up in the next few ranbats!

Dead or Alive 6

  1. CW|Berzerk
  2. Homu|Javi
  3. Xarv

Berzerk seems anxious that if continues to crush DOA6 he’ll run out of win poses.

Granblue Fantasy VS

  1. Marcus
  2. ORDER|ROF
  3. Essa

A strong ranbat signup for GBFVS capped off a great debut month for the newest anime title. ROF, perhaps hearing the discussion around this game being “anime Street Fighter”, brought his impeccable skills to bear and nearly became our inaugural champion, but was fended off in back to back matches by Marcus. Let’s get an even bigger turnout for next month!

A field of players new to the game made for some gloriously loose matchplay.

GGXRD Rev 2

  1. ashxu
  2. Snek
  3. MarcoScaloria

Guilty Gear has become one of the most exciting parts of VIC ranbats, with a solid top group of players seemingly closely matched exhanging the title with each month. This time it was ashxu back on top. With such a strong set of tier players, it’s all the more impressive that Marco broke through this month to post his first podium finish.

UNIST

  1. Silent
  2. Tomo009
  3. Frank

Last month we marked the humbling of Jason “Silent” L., but this month he decided he had paid penance in full and got right back to dominating the UNIST scene. This was an interesting “allstars”-type bracket as well – very small, but full of anime scene stalwarts.

Pokken

  1. Antwerp
  2. Sir Banana
  3. DanDandy

Everyone loves a fun out-of-left-field tournament, and this month’s round-robin Pokken tournament certainly gave those good rogue vibes. Antony “Antwerp” Di Placido certainly took the chance to put on a show, punching out a 5-0 match record with only a single round dropped to cleanly snatch 1st place.

Congratulations to all of our top-placed competitors from February! You can find details of future ranbat events on the CouchWarriors Facebook page.
