QLD January 2020 Ranbat Results

January 11, 2020
Tom Anderson
Couch Warriors / BAM Path To EVO

CouchWarriors QLD first Ranbat of 2020 was held on Saturday the 4th of January at George St Brisbane. Here’s a summary of the results in every game and how the top matches played out. A complete listing of match results and brackets for each game can be viewed on Smash.gg here.

Results for SFV, MK11, Tekken 7, and Smash U count towards the standings for the BAM Path To EVO series for that game, which can be viewed here.

Street Fighter V

  1. Willing Foe
  2. Antaresxv
  3. Happy

Marco “Antaresxv” Encina wasn’t been able to make a lot of ranbats over the back half of 2019 – but whenever he does show up he shows he hasn’t lost his edge. He was able to start the year off right with a strong second place here, although he couldn’t get past Wade “WillingFoe” Ballantyne who finished on top, undefeated.

Tekken 7

  1. GCT|Harlem
  2. tk|jaBBu
  3. Rest

One player who couldn’t maintain the rage after a break was Chang Seop “Rest” Park. Despite winning the last two ranbats he attended, as well as an online event in the interim, this month he had to settle for third. “GCT|Harlem” celebrated the new tag and new year with a strong win, although Gabe “tk|jaBBu” Najarro did manage a reset in Grand Finals.

DragonBall FighterZ

  1. KHFC|SerFab
  2. KHFC|AMDG
  3. Negima

Smash Bros. Melee

  1. smopup
  2. Auro
  3. Brad

Congratulations to smopup on not only making it back-to-back ranbat wins, but also snatching Sam “Auro” White’s spot as the top-ranked QLD player by ELO!

Smash Bros. Ultimate

  1. Shadrew
  2. QLD|Ari
  3. DFS

Andrew “Shadrew” Isokangas also made it two ranbat wins in a row, as well as three of the last four. DFS ran back an earlier loss against Chris “QLD|Shitashi” Goold to achieve his best ever result in a tournament of this size!

Ultimate Doubles

  1. QLD|Shitashi / QLD|Ari
  2. Shadrew / Negima
  3. Iroh / DFS

DFS also made it onto the podium for the doubles event with the aid of Iroh. Meanwhile, the ultra-consistent Ariel “QLD|Ari” Hemat-Siraky took the top spot which he’d been denied in the singles event.

Ultra Street Fighter IV

  1. b2w|ShroomyD
  2. SLD|Xiah
  3. elguso

Since the QLD ranbats started their USFIV revival back in October, Samuel “b2w|ShroomyD” Irwin-Hogarth has climbed from third, to second, and now finally to first. Can he hold onto the top spot next month and make 2020 his year?

Fantasy Strike

  1. KaiDASH
  2. $$|BattleDolphin
  3. Negima

KaiDASH was the final repeat champion helping to bridge the 2019 and 2020 ranbat records. He has looked absolutely dominant in Fantasy Strike, improving over last month’s win by going undefeated this time around. Special props to Negima, who made top 3 in FS, Ultimate Doubles and DBFZ this month – three completely different styles of fighter.

Congratulations to all of our top-placed competitors from January! You can find details of future ranbat events on the CouchWarriors Facebook page.

Godzilla has done what feels like everything since first hitting screens in 1954. We’ve seen Godzilla battle King Kong in a true East meets West monster showdown. We’ve seen Godzilla take on Charles Barkley in a basketbrawl for the ages. Now the King of the Monsters is taking on the Planeswalkers of Magic: The Gathering in its latest set, Ikoria: Land of Behemoths. Best of all, Godzilla won’t be coming to Ikoria alone. Several of Godzilla’s legendary kaiju rivals will also be joining the action as one of the special features of the Ikoria set: Godzilla Series Monster C...

Quarantine means bingeing, so as a massive Star Trek TNG and Jean Luc Picard fan I was very excited to watch the new Amazon Prime series about Starfleet’s best captain. Best. Captain. Ever. Fite me. Picard rocks. Unfortunately, the Picard series on Amazon Prime ended up being pretty lame. Why was Picard so disappointing? It was about how it ended. Read on and start typing your angry replies now…   SPOILERS AHEAD   Season 1 of Picard was set up very well in the early episodes. I enjoyed seeing some old faces again. The concept was interesting. Then it was all let down by...

One of the best parts of any tournament is the sense you’re playing for stakes. Whether it’s prize money, sponsor gear or qualifying points toward the BAM Path to EVO ladder, CouchWarriors events offer plenty of reasons to play hard and chase that trophy. But sometimes, what’s really most important is playing for pride – and for the sweet taste of bragging rights over your rivals. This was the prize on offer last week at the CouchWarriors VIC Smash ranbat, as up-and-comers from the state’s two biggest weekly tournaments clashed in a long-awaited crew battle. EAST ...
