Blizzard Confirms Cancellation of MMO Titan

September 24, 2014

Blizzard LogoBlizzard confirmed in an interview with Polygon today it had cancelled its MMO project Titan, which had been in development for seven years.

Blizzard said the decision to cancel the game was not one they took lightly, with senior vice president of story and franchise development Chris Metzen describing the decision as “excruciating”.

Metzen cited a lack of direction as a reason for the cancellation: “[Titan] definitely had some merit as a big, broad idea, but it didn’t come together. It did not distill.” Nor did they want to put out a poorly constructed game which they felt would “damage the relationship” between them and the players, which ultimately led to the project’s demise.

Blizzard’s recent focus on smaller titles such as Hearthstone also affected this decision, as it realised it was able to create games of differing genres and scales to great success.

Metzen confirmed Blizzard will continue to support World of Warcraft, “My hope personally is that we’ll support it forever.”
