Tom Clancy Passes Away Aged 66

October 3, 2013

Author Tom Clancy has died. He is reported to have passed away in Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Hospital — no cause of death has been released. He was 66.

Tom Clancy was most renowned for his military thriller novels, including Patriot Games and The Hunt For Red October. In the gaming world, he was best known for the games bearing his name. In 1996, he co-founded Red Storm Entertainment, which released Tom Clancy’s Politika in 1997. The studio’s breakout hit came in 1998 with the tactical shooter Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six.

Ubisoft purchased Red Storm in 2000, and since then Tom Clancy’s name has been attached to a number of major titles, including the Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell games. In 2008, Ubisoft acquired the “Tom Clancy’s” naming rights. The next to bear his name, Tom Clancy’s The Division, is set to be released in 2014.

“We are saddened to learn of Tom Clancy’s passing and our condolences go out to his family,” Ubisoft said in a statement, “Tom Clancy was an extraordinary author with a gift for creating detailed, engrossing fictional stories that captivated audiences around the world. The teams at Ubisoft, especially at the Red Storm studio, are incredibly grateful to have collaborated with and learned from him, and we are humbled by the opportunity to carry on part of his legacy through our properties that bear his name.”

Tom Clancy is survived by his wife, Alexandra Llewellyn Clancy, and their daughter Alexis Jacqueline Page Clancy, as well as his four children from a previous marriage: Michelle Bandy, Christine Blocksidge, Kathleen Clancy and Thomas Clancy III.
